I was lucky to spend four months as an intern at PolGov, UGM. These past months, I’ve worked both independently and collaboratively on a media analysis about the Circular Economy (CE) in Indonesia. I also went on a day trip to observe an initiative of the CE, which is referred to as “Waste Bank” or “Bank Sampah”. ‘ Also, I participated in field trips to Bojonegoro and Pontianak, where I gained valuable insights into artisanal oil production and palm oil production. Witnessing these processes closely was truly eye-opening. It deepened my understanding of the importance of ensuring that energy transitions need to be inclusive and just for local communities. I’ve also been immersed into a new culture, which has provided me with a new perspective of another part of the world. I already miss my daily cup of coffee around campus, the Gojek-rides around Yogyakarta, Pisang Goreng, the small breaks for buying “Jajan” and the warm and hospitable people of Indonesia! It has truly been an incredibly exciting and enriching journey – I wish I could do it all over again”.
